Since buying a bright green Monsoon cardigan last year in Winchester, I've had a thing for green clothes. Really, really bright green. The sort of green that would probably not go all that well in a biblical plague of locusts. But green nonetheless. Since then, I've bought another green cardigan and a bright green Winter coat (which arrived just in time for ultra-hot weather here).

I saw these pants the other week on asos.com and thought, "If they're as green as they look on screen, I have to have them."

And they are!

They're so awesome. They arrived last Thursday, and then I ended up ordering a couple more pairs (in some other colours) because I was so happy with the fit, the length, everything. They look a little bit Mad Men casual wear or something in a way, and if the warmer weather continues, I'm definitely going to be teaming them with a lace swing blouse I got from Target years ago for $5 (it was missing a button - score!).

I bought this mask years ago at the Wild Thyme cafe in Warburton, Victoria. They always used to have a lot of local art on display (and I think they still probably do), and this mask just tempted me too much, so I bought it. Supporting local artists and all of that - surprisingly rewarding! I loved the colour, the fit, everything. It's not all that practical, really, when you think about it. But almost all art isn't - it's just the aesthetic functionality of it that works. Plus it was less creepy than the Green Man mask they had. That one gave me the shivers for some reason.

I like a shoe that involves MC Hammer quotes.

Well... Not sure about that. I've never met a shoe that's too legit to quit yet. But I did have an MC Hammer Barbie doll when I was a kid, which came with a tape with a couple of his songs on it and a special message about staying off the drugs. Or something like that. Not totally sure, don't remember, only remember that purple outfit he was accessorised with. Fancy pants.

Anyway.

These are my favourite Irregular Choice shoes of the three pairs I ordered. They are just so beautiful. If I ever get married, I want to wear these for the wedding. I love them that much. The gold pattern, the pretty flowers... The little violets really make the shoe. I don't know why, but they wouldn't be as spectacular without that small splash of purple. Love it. Love them.

You can also kind of see the heel in the upper right side of the pic. So pretty.

Yes, I did get two pairs of Irregular Choice's Flick Flacks. I couldn't decide between this pair and the zebra-print pair. I think I like these slightly more than the zebra-print pair, but it's so close a contest between the two that it doesn't matter at all. But I do like the sequins. And the gentle gold print.

Sooo... I indulged. For the price of free, you may as well get a few pairs, right?

I really like these shoes. Actually, I like all of their shoes. Although their sizes seem to run a little small, so I took advice from teh interwebz (for reals!) and ordered a size or two up. Well, you can always stuff the toe of the shoe with tissue paper or wear insoles. You can't make a shoe that's too small magically fit you. Turns out ordering a couple sizes bigger than usual worked out really well. There's a bit of room to move in the toe area, so I might find some tissue paper for that. But other than that, they are amazing.

Went to the local nursery that sells carnivorous plants today. There were some amazing nepenthes there, but I already have enough of those. Although the Gothica looked so tempting. But the sarracenias caught my eye today - loads of different varieties, a few were flowering, the lids were big and fancy... It was impossible to resist. Bought five sarracenias and two dionaea.

One of the sarracenias was labeled as being a sarracenia flava, although I think judging by its appearance, it's actually a sarracenia flava var. rugelii. Which is cool. I also purchased a couple leucophylla hybrids, a leucophylla x formosa and a minor "Giant." The "Giant" was flowering, and also came with a lot of little droseras of different varieties in the pot too (bonus!). Although there aren't any other pitchers starting to poke up on that one, so who knows how it'll go in the long run.

These are from K-mart and are the most comfortable pair of heels I've worn in ages. I actually bought this grey/silver pair after buying a black pair because I liked them so much. They're great for work because you can wear them all day without your feet getting sore, and they look good with work clothes.

Here's the final pair of Oliver + Co flats with my favourite Sportscraft cardigan (which I actually only use for lounging around the house, but it's so warm and comfortable). The colours on this pair of shoes (called Frank) are fantastic. I haven't had pink shoes in ages, and have been really tempted by the thought of getting some yellow shoes. These sort of combined those two ideas. Not entirely sure what I'll wear with these shoes, but they're great anyway.

Last week, I ordered some ballet flats from Oliver + Co after finding out about their spring sale. Since breaking my leg and wrecking my ankle the other year, I've been more keen on flat shoes. Never used to be, lived in heels, but that's all changed. And the struggle now days is to find cheap, cute flats that look good AND feel comfortable for when you walk a lot, rather than just sitting around looking pretty.

There used to be far more adorable flats in low price ranges back in ye olde days when Target and K-mart were doing knockoffs and generally making cute shoes (if you cast your mind so far back as to say... oh... 2008). You can sometimes find cute, comfy flats in other stores too. But I think to end up getting quality now days, you need to pay for it.

That said, I will admit that I waited until Oliver + Co had a sale.

But I'm really happy with the shoes I bought from them. Especially the ones called Frank - they're described as "stunning banana and pink floral flats." Banana is about right for the colour description. The bright colours are really cheerful and a little bit retro. They aren't the shoes in the photo - I'll take a pic of the Frank ones later. The ones in the photo above are called Fred.

And had I mentioned that I love the names the shoes have? They all sound a little 1950s, a little old-world, and I am absolutely going to wear my pair of Matilda flats while I read Roald Dahl's Matilda at some point.

Actually, that gives me an idea for how to take the photos for that pair.

Bought these years ago for a work Christmas function, which was held at Sky High on Mount Dandenong. Loved it when we had Christmas functions there, and some photos I took from up there of the city skyline at night inspired a couple of the paintings I've done. I think I wore them with a black and white polka-dot dress - really clashy, but I loved the black and white theme I had happening (think I also used my white mesh Oroton handbag for that too). I think I used to be a lot more crazy with the sort of clothes I'd combine, and feel more boring clothes-wise now days. Should work on that, I guess.

These shoes are pretty - gold on the inside, ruffles on the outside, all satiny. Don't wear them often, though, because the wrong sort of length of skirt or pants or whatever creates weird illusions where your legs can look really short and dumpy. The right length of skirt with these looks great, though.

I really like the pink hints on the pitcher of this sarracenia. Judging by one of the small pitchers on the plant from before I bought it, they might darken up considerably to a rather nice purple. Hoping they do. But the soft pinks at the moment are lovely too. In some ways, I think I've bought enough nepenthes and would like to focus more on building up a little swamp/jungle of sarracenias. Which is a plan that's encouraged by the fact that sarracenias are a bit cheaper than nepenthes (unless you're buying the baby nepenthes, in which case it's about the same price).

I lied the other day about favourite shoes. Oh, the shoes on Day Seven of A Month of Shoes are my favourite flat shoes. I love them with a fiery passion. But these shoes will always and eternally be my favourites. They are just so good. Almost everyone who has seen them loves them, they're ridiculously comfortable and I got them really cheaply at K-mart in Chirnside Park a few years ago. If ever anything happens to them, I am going to find a cobbler who will be either able to repair them or remake them (and then make me about 20 pairs of them).

I bought these gladiator-esque heels while staying with K and S when I was avoiding living in Warburton in the month following Black Saturday (due to the town being under threat for that time). They were about $70, I think. Even though I wasn't sure if I'd still have a home in that time, I really wanted these when I saw them. They were probably a comfort buy/retail therapy thing instead of being all that practical, but I still love them, even though they're associated with a really awful situation.

^ Went down to the nursery that sells carnivorous plants on a whim this afternoon. They actually didn't have much in stock. And their nepenthes were up high out of reach, which was a shame. There was a ventricosa x spathulata that looked kind of interesting. Still, really shouldn't get more of those. I'm actually hoping to get more sarracenias now. They are equally fascinating and I love the way the veins go all kinds of interesting colours.

Plus I should give more attention to the nepenthes I own. The tobaica x ampullaria isn't looking all that great - the leaves it's growing are really, really small. If anyone has any ideas of how to improve that situation, let me know! It's the only nepenthes I've bought that hasn't thrived, although I had wondered whether it would survive when I bought it because it was half dead then.

Anyway.

Back to the nursery. Not much stock, and what was there, I already own plants of. However, there were a fair few sarracenias with flower stalks and buds on them, which was pretty exciting. I bought one, although there were two others that really interested me (but I've already got those kind).

Shoes from Target from a few years ago. Since breaking my leg, I don't really find heels all that comfortable, which is really annoying because I generally loved wearing them. I should work on developing a collection of fascinating flat shoes, I guess, and there are some sites I've been eyeing off lately because of their nice shoes. But I still love my heels. And now days, if they have a good, relatively soft platform, I can still handle them - there are two pairs of heels with platforms from K-mart that I've bought this year that are the most comfortable heels I've ever worn in my entire life. Nice work, K-mart.

But I do miss wearing heels more regularly. I guess I could work on getting back into wearing them, but then it makes the ankle hurt a bit and the balls of my feet complain, so who knows. But flats never seem to look as dressy as heels. That's the dilemma.

Feeding the addiction

Went to the local Bunnings today on the way to a 70th birthday party. They sell the occasional venus flytrap and small sarracenias, but usually it's all the same sort of stock. So it was just curiousity today, I guess. Turns out they had a few different types of sarracenia. So I bought three of them. All small stock - about 7cms or so I think. But unfortunately, they're just under the Gobble Guts label. And Gobble Guts never seems to actually put names for the plants on there, which is kind of annoying.

Still, they're interesting small plants, and I'm wondering whether the one in the top photo will grow to be tall like some of the other sarracenias, or if it'll stay small but decorative as it is now. The middle one is some kind of sarracenia psittacina, I think. Not sure about the bottom one (which is only slightly opened), but it's probably another hybrid of some variety.

The lady at the counter had no idea what the plants did, and asked me loads of questions about them. It was kind of fun to talk about what they do and how they work to someone who was really interested in them. After finding out that they do just fine indoors, she said she would love to get some to keep on the kitchen windowsill. So hopefully if she does get some, they behave well for her! :)

In other thoughts, the ants have been going crazy for the really nice tall pitchers lately. Must be something they're secreting or something like that.

A Month of Shoes - Day Four

These ones are from Target from quite a while ago - think I got them in Ringwood. I didn't do that great a job of taking a photo of the heel of these, but they're a bit different. They're further under the foot than heels usually are, and I find that when I don't wear them for ages, it takes a while to get used to that and balance properly.

Fang actually didn't hibernate over winter, although he didn't put much new growth on. But since the weather's been a bit warmer, he's starting to get some new leaves and traps. The moss in his pot is starting to grow up really nicely, too, so it kind of looks like a little garden in there or something. Looking at it like this kind of made me think of Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, which we watched once in primary school. Random, but amusing in a way.

Sarracenias and things

The sarracenia in the bottom pic has a nepenthes spathulata x hirsuta in the background. I accidentally bought two spathulata x hirsutas a while ago, and decided against trying to swap or return the smaller one because I'm hoping it's slightly different to the other, larger plant. Some genes might be more or less dominant in it, who knows. It'll be interesting to see.

Also, the spathulata x hirsuta both have grown pitchers on every single leaf they've produced. It's pretty impressive, because the only other nepenthes I have that has done that so far is the one I called Morticia (I think it's a nepenthes northiana x maxima). The other pitcher plants grow pitchers on most of their leaves, but not all. And the alata in particular seems to be temperamental about this, even though it's grown to about four times the size it was when I bought it.

Anyway, back to duplicates of plants. The same thing happened with two of the sarracenias I have planted in a pot with a drosera, venus fly trap and some other sarracenias - bought two of the same type, but don't really mind too much. They're quite pretty with the pink/purple veins through them when they get more sun exposure.

Apart from the obsession with shoes, I also have a thing for carnivorous plants. Put the sarracenia purpurea out full sun today to try to get it to colour up a little bit. I think it's had a bit much shade, although it's growing really well.

Earlier this year, I gave myself the challenge of A Month of Mobile Photos, following on from reading Photo Radar's 32 Photo Projects for 2011. Obviously, I got distracted after that and didn't do any more "Month Of..." challenges for myself.

But I thought that seeing as I have so many pairs of shoes, maybe I should try to do a month of photos of them. Or maybe more, if I decide to go through every pair of shoes that I own. Which could be interesting. Hmm. Tempting. But we'll start with just trying to do a month of these posts. I'll see if I can keep interest in it, or whether it becomes tedious.

At the moment, I've just got some photos of some of my older pairs of shoes, most of which were from Target (you know, in the good old days when Target actually had nice shoes, did designer knock-offs, stuff like that - why don't they anymore? They have the ugliest shoes at the moment. That said, everywhere has ugly shoes. It's like a plague of ugliness in beige and tan for every foot).

Even though I've probably got nearly enough shoes to get me part of the way through the year (a slight exaggeration).

Top: Dark chocolate and ginger truffles.
Middle: Milk chocolate biscuit truffles.
Bottom: White chocolate, pistachio and rosewater truffles, with coconut flakes on top.

Kind of forgot how to make them and the chocolate biscuit ones would have just been plain milk chocolate truffles were it not for the fact that I added too much cream, ending up with a ganache. So I added blitzed chocolate dessert thins and the mixture was transformed into something workable.

I'm not as happy with them as in the past, but I haven't made them since 2009. So it's not too bad for such a big break, no recipe and not making them exactly as I would have (next time, I have to blitz the pistachios too). But it's rewarding, and they'll make good presents.

Happiness is... watches?

I've been a member of Reebonz for a while now, but have never ordered anything from them until early this week, when they had a sale start with Art and Design Watches. I'd had my eye on that sale for a while simply because the promo photo in the email alerts leading up to it looked really interesting. When the day finally came, it was really exciting to see the different kinds of watches. Not a big watch fan generally, would have thought I'd go for buying a handbag from Reebonz first or something like that. BUT... These watches are awesome.

I had to get one.

So I did.

And since they arrived today (ahead of the scheduled time - nice work!), I haven't been able to stop playing with them. I got a Heartbeat watch and an EG5 watch. The Heartbeat watch is massive and kind of heavy and really not feminine, but it's so awesome. And it makes a lot of sense to read the time from it, which is good because I was a lil' worried it might be confusing. The EG5 is equally easy to read, and I like how different they are from normal watches in how time is read from them.

Plus they light up and are shiny, and I like shiny things.

Another really nice touch with the delivery was the packaging from Reebonz itself. I was really impressed. The boxes are lovely and really sturdy, and I loved the gold ribbons tied around everything. It was beautiful. Not sure when I'll buy things from them in future, but this buying experience was definitely pleasant.

Ahh, The Mighty Boosh.

Haven't watched it in ages, but today when shopping, I thought of it. Smiggle had a load of coloured textas in different colours available. Sooo I bought some. And it made me think of the ep of Mighty Boosh called "Electro."
